Tallow Tree with White-Necked Crow
Tallow Tree with White-Necked Crow is a masterwork of bird-and-flower painting by Qi Baishi (1864–1957), one of the most celebrated figures in modern Chinese art. Executed in ink and color on paper, this hanging scroll measures 134.5 cm in height and 34 cm in width. Though undated, the painting bears the artist's signature inscription Báishí Shānwēng huà (Painted by the Old Man of White Stone Mountain) and is stamped with the red-relief seal Mùrén (Wood Man), both hallmarks of Qi Baishi's mature period.
Artistic Significance
This work exemplifies the essence of the Qi School's freehand (xieyi) style. With a few seemingly casual strokes, Qi Baishi captured the spirit of a white-necked crow perched on a tallow tree branch — a composition that achieves a perfect balance between likeness and abstraction, a principle the artist himself described as "painting must be something between likeness and unlikeness."
The stark contrast between the dark crow and the vibrant autumnal foliage of the tallow tree creates a rhythmic tension that animates the entire scroll. The brushwork is at once bold and restrained — vigorous in the rendering of the tree trunk, delicate in the depiction of the bird's plumage, and spontaneous in the scattered leaves that seem to rustle in an unseen breeze.

Qi Baishi's Legacy
Born into poverty in Xiangtan, Hunan Province, Qi Baishi rose from humble beginnings as a carpenter to become one of the towering figures of 20th-century Chinese painting. His work is distinguished by an extraordinary vitality — whether depicting shrimp, crabs, insects, flowers, or birds, every subject seems to pulse with life. His late-blooming career (he did not achieve widespread recognition until his sixties) is a testament to the power of persistence and the depth of the Chinese literati tradition.
Tallow Tree with White-Necked Crow stands as a quintessential example of the bird-and-flower genre that Qi Baishi elevated to new heights, bridging the refined elegance of classical Chinese aesthetics with a distinctly modern, personal expressiveness.
