Qi Baishi (1864-1957), a native of Xiangtan, Hunan Province, lived in Beijing. He is a master of calligraphy, painting and seal cutting and was once the chairman of the China Artists Association. He began as a carpenter and taught himself painting. He is famous for his paintings of shrimps, which are considered unparalleled. His style combines folk art elements with scholarly brushwork.
