Printmaking Techniques
Chinese printmaking developed distinctive techniques for image reproduction. Woodcut, watermark, and embossed methods each create characteristic effects suited to different purposes.
Woodcut Printing
Woodcut carves images into wooden blocks for ink transfer. The technique allows efficient reproduction of text and image. Chinese woodcuts achieved sophisticated tonal effects through carved line variation.
Watermark Printing
Douban watermark uses multiple carved blocks, each applying a different color. Precise registration creates complex polychrome images. The technique was particularly developed for reproducing paintings.
Embossed Printing
Gonghua printing creates raised impressions without ink, using pressure alone. The technique produces subtle, tactile images that catch light. Often combined with inked printing for layered effects.
