Wang Xizhi (ca. 303-361), style name (zi) Yishao, was born into a family of officials. He excelled in every script but particularly in that of the semi-cursive variety. He was so well grounded in calligraphy that he was remembered for all time as the 'Sage of Calligraphy.' It was said that the water in the nearby pond turned black from ink from his practice. He devoted his entire life and energy to calligraphy.
