Mei Lanfang (1894-1961) was the most famous Peking Opera performer of all time, considered among the four outstanding actors to play 'Dan' or female roles. He began his career on stage at the age of ten. During his long performing career, he acted in and promoted many new plays. He was an innovator of singing styles, dialogue, dance, music, and costume. His fresh, elegant performing style set the standard for Peking Opera. His father died when he was very young, and his mother died when he was 14.
