How to Choose a Fountain Pen

Fountain pens come in three types: gold-nib pens, iridium-tipped pens, and steel pens. Regardless of type, the following points should be noted when choosing one.

1. The Nib Tip — Decisive for Lifespan and Writing Quality

The iridium pellet on the nib tip is the most critical part for the pen's lifespan and writing quality. A larger pellet means a larger contact surface, producing thicker lines and smoother writing; a smaller pellet means finer lines. A quality nib should have a straight, upright tip with a smooth, spherical top surface. The two tines should be equal in size and symmetrically matched.

To test smoothness, ink flow, and line quality, dip the pen in ink and try it. In addition to drawing horizontal and vertical lines, it is a good idea to write plenty of figure-eights. If the nib does not catch on the paper, it is smooth; if the ink flow is neither too dry nor too wet, it is fluid; if the lines are clear and do not vary erratically in width, the writing will be graceful.

2. Check the Ink Sac and Clip

Make sure the ink sac draws ink properly, and the pen clip is springy and resilient.

3. Appearance

The pen should be elegantly shaped and stylishly designed, with a glossy surface finish. All components should fit together flush and firmly, and the brand marking should be clearly legible.
