Calligraphy Schools

Chinese calligraphy history is organized around master calligraphers whose styles influenced subsequent generations. These schools provide models for study and reference points for aesthetic discussion.

Two Wangs

Wang Xizhi and his son Wang Xianzhi established the foundation for running and cursive scripts. Their work, preserved through copies and engravings, remains the primary model for these styles.

Tang Masters

Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan, Ouyang Xun, and Zhao Mengfu represent regular script mastery. Zhang Xu and Huai Su pushed cursive script to expressive extremes. Each developed distinctive approaches to brush handling and character structure.

Song and Ming Masters

Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, Mi Fu, and Cai Xiang created the Song dynasty scholarly style. Dong Qichang and Wen Zhengming dominated Ming dynasty calligraphy with refined, elegant approaches.
